With all the new commercials coming out of Redmond recently, people have been wondering what this new search engine Bing is all about and why Microsoft is calling it a “decision engine“. Microsoft has released a series of videos explaining what the big deal is. For those of us who like a more boiled down definition it’s basically a search engine that not only finds you information but also attempts to make it more usable to humans. Microsoft has released an open letter to the public explaining this concept in greater detail.
Some might jump to the conclusion that because Bing is also a search engine then all search engines are “decision engines”. This is not the case. To make it simpler we’ve made the following Venn diagram to illustrate our point:

As you can see, a decision engine is a search engine because it has to crawl the web and find information. However, a search engine is not a decision engine unless it helps you make use of the results it displays.
It will definetly be interesting to see how well Bing will be received by everyday users in the next coming months.
So why is this site called Bingseoguide.com instead of Bingdeoguide.com? Well, if you haven’t figured it out yet, DEO basically is SEO. Perhaps we might say that it is a certain kind of SEO. Either way, you’ll notice that if you type Bingdeoguide.com in your browser it takes you to this site as well. Maybe, the term DEO will catch on in the next couple years and we’ll have to change the name of the site. Only time will tell.

This makes it easy for a non tech person to understand bing a little better. I think it’s a little less daunting to try using bing, when you understand better what it’s doing.
I want to raise my search rankings when people look for me on Bing. Are you a Bing SEO expert, or able to help drive traffic & make the decision to visit my top websites? Is Bing the new Google search engine?
Thanks, LFR
Indeed I agree with your thesis. A decision engine is basically a search engine with decision making help added to it. But there’s one exception.
Apparently Hunch.com is being positioned as a decision as well. Yet Hunch.com is not a search engine. So where would that fit?
Bill – I still would call it a search engine because by deciding for you it is in turn searching for you. Maybe a “search directory” would be a better statement?
I personally am not very fond of hunch because I don’t like having to enter all that data beforehand. But that is just my preference. What do you think?
Valuable gift for anybody who needs backlinks for no charge. Anyone need free backlinks for their webite? I thought I might share some awesome information I found recently. Free one way backlinks for your blog. I have been using this for my blogs and it really works great! Click my name to get what I mean. Not selling a thing, it’s totally free and it works.
This is acceptable in terms of search engine optimization. Nothing looks to rag on them compared to this.Funnily enough, this is exactly what was warned about ten years prior at the last big internet about SEO some number of years ago in ’93!
extraordinary topic and a million thanks for the link. Your ideas hailed over as complete and experienced, and are referenced throughout the write up. :-)

if anyone want’s to try this, go to bing, metacrawler, ask, and any other search engine (and I call all of them a search engines cause I don’t really see any ‘decisions’ being made) and try an images search of the ‘colorado pine beetle’. each engine including bing brings up 3 actual pictures of the beetle were the remaining are of the forests it’s killing. if you ask me a real ‘decision’ engine would decided to show more of the beetle and not the devistation. so in my opinion calling it a ‘decision’ engine is just a lame marketing gimick. –My 2 cents
